Near the foothills of the temple, a penitent, right foreground, carries a 50-pound “kavadi” coming down from the 272 steps at the top of the Hindu temple Batu Caves in Kuala Lumpur Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004. The kavadi, a metal frame cocooning the penitent’s body, is attached with hundreds of thin hooks and steel shafts. The festival known as Thaipusam was brought to Malaysia in the 19th century by Indian immigrants who came to work on rubber estates and in gov. offices.
