Sungai Miri is a small river that runs through the heart of Miri city. A little away, it flows along old fishing kampongs such as Pasir, as pictured. Idyllic as it may look, the river has become very dirty, being polluted by sawmills and untreated sewage from the many (often illegal) settlements along the river. The kampongs next to Miri suffer from a decline of life quality and culture which seems to be typical for areas in the vicinity of cities. Renamed a “Resort City.” I wonder how Miri feels with a dirty sungai flowing right through the middle.

  1. well, as a Miri-an myself, I am actually quite embarrased with the Sungai Miri’s condition. But what to do, we can’t possibly make the “Milo drinks” into clean and clear now, do we?

  3. Sungai miri can be cleaned. It’s a question of will and money. Without cleaning up the river ‘resort city Miri’is just keeping appearances.
