Spiralling electric candles are common in Miri, Sarawak. They are signaling, politely named, ‘areas of public recreation.’ There are an estimated 50-100 saloons in town, with five to ten (Iban, Indonesian) prostitutes working in any of them. The sex market is particularly fueled by visitors from Brunei, who try to escape the wealthy, but dull lifestyle of the tiny, boring kingdom.

  1. But there is a dark side to the superficially pretty female bodies and the fake smiles: Miri is infested with drugs, there is corruption, and condoms are not widely used which means venereal diseases are rampant. Worse, some 65% of all prostitutes in town are estimated to be carriers of HIV.

    Disaster will strike soon…
