Picture was taken from the balcony of my humble abode. View of Penang’s famous Batu Ferringhi beach and it’s kampung in the foreground.
Narrative:
Woke up early, but without the “mood” to seriously do any work. I wanted to go out to look for something to photograph, but the car was not home and I was not “motivated” nor am I “inspired” enough to actually get my butt off my lazy chair. After my usual morning huge mug of coffee, I stepped out to the balcony (which I rarely do in the morning) just to catch some sun, hoping that sunlight can help revitalise me today. Staring out to the sea not so far away just made my already “lazy mood” worst! The hazy and dull morning, compounded the feeling 10 times over!
My mind went back to the time, just after my O levels eons ago, when a wise cikgu (teacher in Malay), once told us, “Treasure the days you have now including the time in school, as they are the best days in your life!”
Being young and ignorant then, all of us in the class including yours truly, started to boo at this wise teacher and some of us even playfully hurled crumpled paper balls made from the ripped off pages of our exercise book, which we no longer had any use for, at him! “Come on… what’s so great about school… we all rather grow up faster and be elsewhere, except being in school…” was our feeling! He just laughed us off and left saying…”You will all know in a few years time…”
Remembering his wise words again, I let out a sigh, realising it is so true, like I’ve done many, many times over many, many years before today and there are times like today, I wished I was back to my childhood days again, being free from “adult responsibilities” and with no worries…
Now what does all this reminiscences of the wise words of my past cikgu have anything to do with this corny picture?
The stretch of beach and the kampung in the picture reminded me of my childhood years. I spent my growing up years by the sea. I lazed, I fished, I swam, or just cycled around the kampung or from one kampung to another with friends without any care in the world – nothing to worry about, except perhaps our grades!
The beach is so near, yet so far… I cannot be lazing there for now, as I know I have my “adult responsibilities” to fulfil! While taking the few short steps to my office, I make plan to spend some time with my daughter by the beach before the week is over, and to teach her to value her growing years, as I have valued mine.
